The first Monday in October marks the opening of the U.S. Supreme Court’s new term, and as The Washington Post indicated on the front page yesterday, among the Court’s leading cases may be one that will “reopen the question of affirmative action in college admissions.” In mid-September, opponents of racial affirmative action appealed a Fifth Circuit decision in Fisher v. Texas sustaining the use of race in admissions at the University of Texas at Austin. UT now has the chance to file a reply, after which the Court will decide whether or not to take the case. If the Court accepts the case, a decision would be expected by June.
