Entertainment personality Donald Trump recently claimed that President Barack Obama likely had bad grades and therefore didn't deserve a place at Columbia University and Harvard Law. Implicit in Trump's argument is the idea that Obama was a beneficiary of affirmative action and didn't truly earn his Ivy League degrees.
On the flip side, many professors on today's campuses argue that "White privilege" is a bigger issue than affirmative action. Whites like Trump, who were born into incredible wealth, may actually be less deserving (in terms of educational achievement and merit) than a person of color who had to overcome racism to succeed in school. This is because the good grades of rich Whites may have been the result of unfair advantages like private tutors rather than effort.
