Opposing Views: Do We Still Need Affirmative Action?

Opposing Views:
Online Debate on Affirmative Action

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Martin Luther King spoke these words in 1963, and they still resonate today. Affirmative action programs were established to create this very type of equality, but have they brought us closer to Dr. King’s dream or only hindered it?

AAAA participates in this online debate on Affirmative Action sponsored by "Opposing Views" at http://www.opposingviews.com/questions/do-we-still-need-affirmative-action. Other "debaters" include BAMN, the Center for Equal Opportunity and Gary Orfield. Please go to the debate and "weigh in." Thanks!

Yes, we still need affirmative action. The recent disasters in our financial markets should be proof enough for those who disagree that man is not yet ready for deregulation. Given the choice of following the law or doing what's right for America, it appears companies will always choose the selfish method.
Most of our laws have policies, procedures, and penalties. Why should EEO laws be any different?
Some companies complain, "I don't know how to employ and do business in a fair manner," "There's no minority talent out there!" Well, affirmative action shows how simple it is to do business as usual equitably by reaching out to everyone!
Remember, discrimination and harassment continues in America on a grand scale with affirmative action and regulations! Just take a look at EEOC and OFCCP investigations and litigations -- not to mention civil lawsuits. Can you imagine what would happen if we elect the "anything goes" attitude?
It could be that the "hue and cry" of "down with affirmative action" could just be a pretext to continue discrimination and harassment in America without the bother of financial risks and penalties.
