United Educators Report: Disability Claims Dominate Discrimination Cases

United Educators, the insurance company that covers hundreds of colleges and universities, analyzed the liability claims brought against their clients between 2004 and 2008 and released a report of its findings. In the abstract provided to the public, UE announced that students brought nearly 38 percent of these claims. Among the student claims were allegations of negligence causing bodily harms and wrongful acts by colleges and universities. The wrongful acts, which constituted 20 percent of the allegations, include claims of discrimination and assaults.

Sexual assaults constituted a majority of assault claims. Disability was most frequently alleged among the discrimination claims (39 percent) and race followed at 20 percent of discrimination claims, followed by gender and age.
