OFCCP Announces Record Financial Remedies in FY '07

OFCCP Once Again Produces Record Financial Remedies for a Record Number of American Workers in FY 2007

Enforcement Garners $51,680,950 for 22,251 workers subjected to discrimination

The Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs announced on December 31, 2007 that its enforcement activity resulted in financial settlements (back pay, annualized salaries and benefits) equalling $51,680,950 and benefiting more than 22 thousand workers. The agency boasts that 98 percent of these remedies resulted from its emphasis on systemic discrimination. The $52 million constitutes a 78 percent increase over settlements obtained in FY 2001. With its Applicant Case Management System, the agency asserts that it opens more reviews than it did in the past and uses automated statistical tools to rank and prioritize establishments for further compliance evaluations.

In FY 2007, OFCCP:

* Conducted 4,923 audits — a 24% increase over 2006. Only once during the
past seven years were more audits conducted

* Collected $51,680,950 in back pay, salary and benefits from audited
organizations — a slight increase over 2006.

* Acquired compensation for a record 22,251 workers (applicants and current and
past employees) subjected to alleged discrimination because of unlawful
employment policies or practices.

* Conducted 31 corporate management (also known as “Glass Ceiling”) reviews
